SMASHING SUCCESS FOR EVENLODE!
21 Mai 2009
Pupils from Evenlode Primary School in Penarth have proven to be the Vale of Glamorgan’s top tennis aces by winning six out of nine events in a county-wide primary schools championships.
Held at three Vale tennis clubs, the championships were organised by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Dragon Sport team in conjunction with Tennis Wales and featured teams of four players competing in three different age groups.
Evenlode won both the girls and boys titles in the year six and under (mini green) competition at Dinas Powys LTC, with the pupils from St Andrews Major C/W Primary School taking glory in the mixed event.
It was a clean sweep for Evenlode in the year five and under (mini orange) age group as they won all three finals at Windsor LTC, while in the youngest age group – year three and under (mini red) – Evenlode also tasted success in the girls competition, with Albert Primary winning the boys title and Llansannor triumphing as the mixed champions.
All of the winners will now go forward to represent the Vale in the regional finals later this summer, and the Vale Council’s Dragon Sport Co-ordinator Rachel McGuinness said: "The championships were a huge success, with the children showing a lot of promise and really enjoying themselves. I’d like to thank everyone involved, from the tennis clubs who hosted the events, the players who took part and the teachers and parents who umpired. Pupils from St Cyres Comprehensive School were also extremely helpful and showed a lot of initiative and maturity while developing their competition organisation skills."
The Dragon Sport initiative aims to get primary school pupils active from a young age by encouraging greater numbers of seven to 11-year-olds to take part in extra-curricular sport. Led by the Sports Council for Wales and funded by the National Lottery, the scheme focuses on eight sports – hockey, football, athletics, cricket, rugby, golf, netball and tennis.
