WELSH OPEN ATTRACTS 100 RISING STARS

3 Maw 2009

More than 100 rising stars of British tennis took part in the Aegon British Tour event at Swansea Tennis Centre.

Of the 20 Welsh entries for the Welsh Open Championships, Dan Sidaway from Cardiff was most successful, reaching the quarter-final.

Other Welsh players, Mat James from Mold, Ed Jones from Carmarthen and Francesca Lewis from Ammanford all reached the last 16.

There was disappointment on finals day when men’s top-seed Maniel Bains was unable to play against Warwickshire county team-mate Andrew Fitzpatrick. Bains, who has recently returned from several months out with a wrist injury, felt unable to play after his record-breaking four and a half hour semi-final battle against Cheshire’s Dominic Ross-Hurst.

The ladies final was a competitive battle between two 18-year-old students, with Alex Zaniewski, from Millfield School in Somerset, winning 6-4; 6-4 against top seed Michelle Farley (Dorset).

Zaniewski, who is coached at Millfield by Julie Sinkins from Bridgend, showed the greater consistency on her ground strokes and was able to hold serve more easily than her opponent.

"This was a very competitive tournament and a rare chance to see the best young British players competing in Wales," said Mary Hunter, Tournament Organiser for City & County of Swansea.
