WHAT CAN SPORTS SCIENCE DO FOR ME AND MY ATHLETES?

2 Maw 2009

The North Wales Regional Institute of Sport is running a sports science seminar at the Talardy Hotel, St Asaph this Thursday 5 March starting at 6.30pm.

The session is aimed at all North Wales coaches and athletes working at national and regional squad level that would benefit from more information on Sports Science disciplines. It will be delivered by Matt Cosgrove, Sports Science Manager at the Sports Council for Wales, who has many years of experience of working with a wide range of sports at an elite performance level.

An explanation will be given into the different disciplines of sports science and how they can be used to enhance an athlete’s training and competition performance. An overview will be provided on the potential benefits of utilising physiology, sport psychology, strength and conditioning, performance analysis and nutrition. Case studies will also be presented on how this support has been accessed by coaches to improve athlete performance.

Sports Council for Wales Member, Hywel Meredydd said: "We hope that this is the first many courses to support coaches working with performance athletes in North Wales."

The North Wales Regional Institute of Sport (NWRIS) is a network of facilities, service providers and coaches all working together to provide an athlete centred approach. The Institute focuses on placing the identified talented athlete in the centre and surrounding them with the necessary support to assist them in fulfilling their potential and to ensure that elite and talented athletes based in North Wales are given the best possible chance to fulfil their potential.

The NWRIS was launched in November 2007 by the Welsh Assembly Government who provided a £250,000 cash injection to support the establishment of the Institute. Since the launch of the NWRIS, links have been established with partners, including National Governing Bodies of Sport and Higher Education and Further Education institutions and support service providers across the region. At present there are over 70 athletes receiving different levels of support throughout the region.

One of the main aims of the NWRIS is to try and help support the transition of identified talented North Wales based athletes into the Welsh and GB teams and squads. The NWRIS offers support for identified coaches working with talented and elite athletes through the provision of workshops and other CPD opportunities to help support them with their own personal development.
