HALF TERM ACTIVITY RELIEVES NEWTOWN BOREDOM

26 Chwef 2009

February half term in Powys proved to be a hive of activity as students from Newtown High School banished the boredom and participated in three days of back to back activities.

From traditional sports such as basketball and football to alternative activities such as break dancing, archery and karate, there was plenty on offer to keep everyone on their toes.

The camp was organised as part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s 5x60 programme, which is managed by the Sports Council for Wales and run at a local level by Powys County Council and aims to get secondary school children not engaged in sport and physical recreation more active, more often.

The 5x60 Officer at the school, Kate Preston, put on a variety of activities for the youngsters to try their hands at and was supported by the community’s local sports clubs in a bid to introduce them to the opportunities available on their doorstep and to encourage them to get involved.

With the camp proving to be such a success, plans are already in the pipeline to introduce Ryder Cup fever to the pupils with golf festivals taking place in the forthcoming Easter holidays and further camps and activities to look forward to in the summer holidays.
