NEW INDOOR CLIMBING SESSIONS GET OFF THE GROUND
14 Hyd 2008
A keen head for heights and a sense of adventure are being shown by young people, including those with disabilities, at new indoor climbing sessions at the Colcot Sports Centre in Barry.
Every Friday evening from 7 – 8pm, youngsters can hit the wall at the sessions organised by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s sports and play development team. They start off by learning how to climb on the lower section before progressing onto the vertical climb.
The sessions are totally inclusive so that young people with disabilities can take part alongside their siblings and friends.
The youngsters are instructed by brothers Anthony and Tom Spurrier. The University students work as part-time recreation assistants for the Vale Council, and also run a local badminton club that offers inclusive opportunities.
Funding to get the climbing sessions off the ground was provided by a Community Chest grant from the Sports Council for Wales, and they have been organised by the Vale Council’s Disability Sport Wales Development Officer Linda Ruston in partnership with Sports Development Officer Brandon Walters.
Linda said: "The funding has enabled us to initially run the sessions up until late November, but if they continue to grow in popularity then they will become self-sufficient and the youngsters will be able to enjoy meeting up to climb together for the foreseeable future. Everyone is having a really exhilarating time and they are showing a lot of determination to get to the top."
Each weekly session costs £2.50 and you can either just turn up on Friday evenings to join the group or find out more by calling Linda Ruston on 01446 704728 or Brandon Walters on 01446 709128.
