WELSH ROWERS MAKE WAVES
23 Mehef 2008
Welsh rowers boosted their hopes ahead of August's Olympic Games by winning medals in Olympic class finals at the World Cup in Poland.
There was gold for Monmouth's Tom Lucy and the men's eight. The GB crew carved out a dominant victory over world silver medallists Germany and Poland in a small field.
And, after a season disrupted by injury, Tom James of Wrexham and the men's four took silver.
James passed a late fitness test before the Polish regatta which meant that GB were able to field their chosen line-up of the Welshman, Steve Williams, Peter Reed and Andy Hodge for the first time this season.
But the quartet did not employ their usual explosive start and were not able to claw back the Netherlands' lead in the closing metres, settling for second.
